I designed this book cover to meet the specifications of the 2020 Penguin Student Design Award for the children's novel "Goodnight Mister Tom" by Michelle Magorian. The cover depicts the main character of the book, Will, and his dog. The challenging part of this project was finding a way to convey the book's darker themes while at the same time depicting the hope Will found in Mister Tom. My solution was to use darker colors to allude to the book's harsher themes and the trials Will faces. I used the scene depicted in the boy and the dog to foreshadow the hope Mister Tom gave Will. The sans serif typeface shows the book is geared towards a middle-grade audience.
